ARMILLARY

A striking 20^th century English armillary sundial sphere set upon a tapering 19^th century carved stone pedestal found in Belgium.

Armillaries were originally used by ancient astronomers to track the paths of celestial objects in the sky. The addition of numerals on the inside of the bands quantified the movement of the sun and allowed for the telling of time.
