PAIR OF EXCEPTIONALLY LARGE FAUX BOIS PLANTERS

An impressive matching pair of exceptionally large early 20th century French faux bois trough form planters. Imagine the planting possibilites.

Faux bois (literally translated as "false wood") was an art form originating in France well over a century ago and was derived from the rustic or naturalistic design esthetic gaining popularity at the time.  In creating pieces of this type  artisans would apply by hand several successive layers of a concrete and aggregate mix around a formed iron armature and work the material while it was curing. This was a rather time consuming and labor-intensive process with the final layer being the scoring of the piece resulting in the planter appearing to be made of real wood as seen here.
